In February 2024, Mr. Matthieu Jost, a member of the European University Cyprus – CERIDES (EUC-CERIDES) team, visited Barcelona. The goal was to engage with the Pau Costa Foundation, under the context of the 5th Staff Exchange Twinning Visit of Work Package 5.
This visit was a significant step in strengthening collaborations between SEMEDFIRE’s co-ordinator and Widening Institution EUC-CERIDES and Advanced Partner Pau Costa Foundation, focusing on wildfire prevention and management strategies.
During his visit, Mr. Jost participated in discussions on advancing joint projects and exploring innovative approaches to enhance resilience against wildfires across Mediterranean landscapes.
As part of the SEMEDFIRE framework, the EUC-CERIDES representative had the opportunity to meet with GRAF, Catalonia’s specialized forest unit. The unit was conducting a prescribed burn exhibition training at the time. This hands-on experience provided valuable insights into how prescribed burning has become a crucial tool for fire prevention in Spain.
Additionally, the visit facilitated a dialogue with various stakeholders, including civil protection, land planners, rural agents, and local government officials. Participants had the opportunity to discuss measures for enhancing the self-protection of communities impacted by wildfires.
The SEMEDFIRE Staff Exchange Twinning Visits and the Hands-on Trainings are part of the project’s effort to improve fire management practices. Timing of the visit was of an essence, as it significantly added value to the workshop on integrated fire management planned to be held in Cyprus in April 2024.
